The processor is the brains of your computer, but your RAM is the heart. RAM is where programs in use are stored for easier access, eliminating the need for constant loading from disks. Your available RAM almost single-handedly determines the speed of your computer. The more you have, the faster your system is able to run when you are working with several applications at once.

When you first bought your computer you probably had enough RAM for the time. After two or three years, however, available RAM might not be enough to support more complex applications. Running several at a time can eat memory even faster. Today, anything less than 256 MB is probably not enough. You'll need to upgrade.

RAM today is a lot faster than in years past. New chip architecture has made it possible to dramatically increase memory speeds. Synchronous dynamic RAM, (SDRAM) is the new industry standard, and features speeds that are easily four times faster than they were even three years ago. Some companies are even clocking RAM for speed in hertz.

There are two ways to go about buying new memory. You can contact your computer's manufacturer and get a list of compatible modules. Not every card will work in every computer so be sure you know it will work before installing it. You can also speak to a technician about available system memory and even have it installed by a professional if you aren't comfortable with doing it yourself.
