Compaq DeskPro Memory

The DeskPro computer was Compaq's flagship model for years, and there are still a few in use today. These computers are outdated by today's standards, although they are good to have around for older software that is not compatible with Windows XP or other next generation operating systems. You can even upgrade your Deskpro's memory to increase its usability.

New processors will not work on your Deskpro because the motherboards are incompatible. You can find a larger hard drive to start off your upgrade mission. The largest you might be able to fit into a Deskpro would probably be less than five gigabytes. Your best bet when upgrading these computers is to use new RAM modules.

New RAM modules will increase system performance quite a bit, but you'll still be hampered by low processor speed. Increasing to at least 256 MB is your best bet for overcoming system sluggishness. These modules can be bought from third party retailers for approximately $100, although you can double up on modules if your motherboard has an additional memory slot.

If you are using a Deskpro for casual use and to play older games then they are great machines to have handy. Newer systems are often incapable of playing older games or using outdated software suites. Even so, these computers just don't have the processing power to handle new software, so buying a new system is your best bet at this time. Keep the Deskpro more for nostalgia than for practical application.
