Buy the biggest hard drive and memory module you can afford. Larger hard drives allow you to store a much larger base of information, which limits the need for reading from the disk drive. The information can instead be installed to the hard drive and then loaded into the system's memory during use. A 100 GB hard drive today costs roughly $150 to $200.

RAM is also immensely important for your computer's lifespan. Newer Presario models ship with no less than 256 MB of memory installed, but if you are customizing your computer you should increase this as much as you can afford. Higher RAM levels will limit slowdown and sluggish performance. If your computer is older and you are looking to upgrade you can still do so since module architecture hasn't changed much in recent years.
