Computer Memory

Computers for the home or office have come a long way even in the last ten years. The machines of yesteryear were capable of a very limited number of functions. Today's personal computers are capable of handling all the computing needs of our personal and professional lives. As computers have evolved, so have the available components for upgrading them.

Computer Memory is the heart of your computer. Your computer needs memory to store open programs and applications. This is so your disk drive doesn't have to be accessed continually for information. The more computer memory you have, the more applications you can have running at the same time.

There was a time when 128MB was enough memory for modern computers, but applications have become more complex. We are also running a much greater number of background programs than ever before, including our operating systems, anti-virus software, and screensavers. These applications draw available computer memory away from our publishing and productivity programs.

New computer memory styles have made system memory faster than every before. The latest milestone for RAM has been the the creation of Double-Data Rate 2 RAM (DDR-2 RAM). This style is capable of an incredible amount of processes and is cheaper than ever before to produce. It is also able to handle multitasking much faster than computer memory styles could only a few years ago. Some memory modules are being clocked as fast as a few powerful microprocessors are.

Giving Your Computer More Memory
If your computer is a few years old then there is a good chance it is starting to feel like it's running more slowly. Its current memory capacity will become less adequate as your computing becomes more sophisticated. Your best bet would be to save to buy a new computer, but that might be impractical for some users. There is an alternative, however.

Computers are made using motherboards, which are the processing centers of your computer. The motherboard is what all of your computer's components are connected to. These boards also include space for upgrades and new components. This makes it very easy for you to buy new graphics cards, modems, sound cards, and computer RAM memory.

RAM Compatibility
When you are ready to upgrade your system memory, you need to buy memory that is compatible with your computer. No memory module is built to be universally compatible, so you need to find modules that are specifically made for your system. You can find out which are compatible either by contacting your manufacturer or you can shop using a third party memory retailer such as Arch Memory.

Computer memory comes in various capacities. Common memory modules today are 256MB to 2GB, although there are several sizes available in between. The most common starting system memory today is 256MB, but you can upgrade that to 512MB or more with the addition of one or two modules. The cost for upgrading your computer will hardly ever be more than $100 unless you are working with a server or printer. Those systems require special memory modules and can be more expensive, but casual users don't need to worry about such chip sets.
