Computer RAM

RAM is one of the most important components in your desktop or laptop computer. All of your important programs run directly from your available RAM once they are loaded into memory, and remain resident until you shut them down. In the past you could only run one operation at once, but the advent of new RAM architectures has made multi-tasking much simpler.

DRAM replaced conventional RAM several years ago as the dominant memory platform. Dynamic RAM is capable of running functions much faster and does so while also being able to cache out space to other functions. Today, synchronous DRAM (SDRAM) further advances RAM by creating a two level access procedure. This is because of the voltage requirements memory chips have to function.

Memory chips once worked only in one "direction," accessing memory from low-to-high voltage. SDRAM can now access memory in both low-to-high and high-to-low paths, doubling the speed of onboard RAM. This is also very popular in some graphics cards that run three-dimensional software.

When you are planning on buying RAM for your desktop, make sure your motherboard has space for upgrade. You might need to swap out your old card to place the new one. High capacity memory cards have become extremely affordable, so it's possible to buy 512 MB of RAM or more for under $200.
