Laptop Memory

Your laptop came with RAM already installed, and with most modern models you usually end up with plenty. Taking home a laptop that has 512 MB of SDRAM or higher is ideal and you will have very few if any performance issues using it. The only time people with that much RAM ever really have trouble with performance is if they are running graphics intensive processes. Onboard graphics cards work to compensate for this problem.

Computers with 256 MB SDRAM are also in good shape, but with so many programs now requiring a heavier system load, you might want to consider upgrading your existing RAM board to one with more memory. You will need to consider a few important factors before you can make this decision.

First you will need to choose RAM that is compatible with your laptop. Many manufacturers build their computers to only accept company specific memory cards, which will limit your options. Dell and Apple are two good examples of computers that use company specific memory cards.

You will also want to consider the price of the upgrade. This was a major concern in the past, but memory has become much more affordable in recent years. You can find a great 512 MB SDRAM memory card for under $150 today, so upgrading is more affordable, but you need to consider how much memory you need. Also, remember that many laptops require the removal of the previous card as there is limited room in the chassis for additional cards. Whatever you are upgrading to will often be your new available total RAM.
