PC Memory

Home office pc computers have come a long way since their infancy in the mid- to late seventies. Those machines were capable of a very limited number of functions and uses. Today's personal computers are capable of handling all the productivity of our personal and professional lives. As computers have evolved, so have the available components.

Memory is the heart of your PC. Your computer needs memory to store open applications. This is so your disk drive doesn't have to be accessed continually for information. The more memory you have, the more applications you can have running at once.

There was a time when 128 MB was ample memory for modern computers, but applications have become more complex. We are also running a much greater number of background processes than ever before, including our operating systems, anti-virus software, even screensavers. These applications draw available memory away from our publishing and productivity programs.

New PC memory architecture has made system memory faster than every before. RAM has hit a new milestone with the creation of Double Data Rate RAM (DDR RAM). This architecture is capable of an incredible amount of processes. It is also able to handle multitasking much faster than RAM could only a few years ago. Some memory modules are being clocked as fast as a few powerful microprocessors are.

Giving Your PC More RAM Memory
If your PC is a few years old then there is a good chance it is showing signs of age. Its current memory capacity will become less adequate as your computing becomes more sophisticated. Your best bet would be to save to buy a new computer, but that might be impractical for some users. There is an alternative, however.

PC computers are made using motherboards, which are the processing centers of your computer. The motherboard is what all of your computer's components are connected to. These boards also include space for upgrades and new components. This makes it very easy for you to buy new graphics cards, modems, sound cards, and RAM.

RAM Compatibility
When you are ready to upgrade your PC's memory, you need to buy memory that is compatible with your computer. No memory module is built to be universally compatible, so you need to find modules that are system specific. You can find out which are compatible either by contacting your manufacturer or you can shop using a third party memory retailer.

PC RAM memory comes in various capacities. Common memory modules today are 256 MB to 1 GB, although there are several sizes available in between. The most common starting system memory today is 256 MB, but you can upgrade that to 512 MB or more with the addition of one or two modules. The cost for upgrading your computer will hardly ever be more than $100 unless you are working with a server or router. Those systems require special RAM memory modules and can be more expensive, but casual users don't need to worry about such chip sets.
